The Multidisciplinary Master’s Degree in Sciences and Technologies for Music
ATIAM – ACOUSTICS, SIGNAL PROCESSING, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE APPLIED TO MUSIC
The ATIAM Master’s Program, established upon the joint initiative of several French research and teaching institutions active in research and supported by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, is offered at Sorbonne University and organized by IRCAM—responsible for coordination and housing—and Télécom ParisTech.
The program is designed to provide the scientific fundamentals and musical knowledge necessary to carry out research in the fields of musical acoustics, sound signal processing, and musical informatics. The program’s originality lies in its multi- disciplinary nature; students are required to have a high level of scientific expertise and an understanding of artistic creation. ATIAM offers a scientific approach to the entire chain of sound and music computing from the physical and psychophysical dimensions to digital modeling and high-level symbolic structures. Students are exposed to a broad spectrum of disciplines:information sciences and technologies, physics, and humanities.
In addition to attending courses, students take part in IRCAM’s artistic and intellectual activities. They have the opportunity of meeting researchers with a variety of backgrounds and affiliations from IRCAM, Sorbonne University, CNRS, and Télécom ParisTech.
Master’s Degree in Sciences and Technologies delivered by Sorbonne University, in either Computer Science or Engineering Science, with the qualification “Parcours ATIAM”
Applicants must have a first year of Master’s experience or hold a M1 French degree (or equivalent) in a related field, from a university or engineering school in France or abroad. Applicants must have an excellent understanding of at least two of the three main domains studied in ATIAM—acoustics, signal processing, or computer science— and show a strong interest in music.
Most career opportunities for ATIAM graduates reside in public and private research and engineering positions, teaching, and in the music software and professional audio industries. Some graduates have created their own start-up or have gone on to careers as professional artists.
